Fabric, Thread, and Green Lace

We’ve all been there. That beautiful piece of ribbon or fabric or lace that beckons you to “Buy it Now”. And then it arrives and it’s just not. . . what you expected.

It’s weird. The color isn’t what you thought it was, the texture is too stiff, or some other disappointment makes you regret the purchase.

One of my own examples of this is a small bag of lace. It looked so pretty in the auction photo! But when it arrived it was – wait for it – GREEN.

And not a nice green, either.

How had it ever become this color? Had it faded from something that was originally better? Because there was no way, in my opinion, someone had ever done this to a piece of lace on purpose.

Well.

Enter my desire to make a trousseau of lingerie for Celeste. I started with a fantastic piece of antique polka-dotted wool I’d saved for just such an occasion. It’s a beautiful old-fashioned shade of turquoise, and I was immediately inspired to create the floral embroidery for the underwear and nightgown using similar aged-looking shades.

Including a decidedly wonky looking green.

You guessed it. The exact same weird green of my “ugly” lace. Thank goodness I didn’t just throw it away when it arrived! Because it’s perfect and wonderful and no longer weird at all.

I’ve been smiling about the serendipity of this all morning.
