When I was in first grade, my mother stitched me up a wonderful mix-and-match set out of wool. Two pleated skirts – solid cranberry and cranberry plaid – along with a reversible sleeveless top (one side from each of the skirt fabrics) to wear over a crisp, white blouse. I loved these pieces to death, which is probably why plaids make me feel so warm and cozy inside – even after all these years.

They make me nostalgic – for first days of school, pumpkin carving, crunching through leaves on the sidewalk . . .

And now today, Hattie’s plaid trimmed jumper set is finished.

The timing doesn’t always work out as well. I don’t always get to sew spring dresses in spring, or a winter coat when it’s cold outside. But this time everything overlapped perfectly.

I made a plaid trimmed jumper, there are leaves on the ground, and it’s fall.

So hurray for serendipity – and hurray for pretty plaids!
