Frank Leslie was a British born illustrator and journalist. In 1848 he moved to the U.S. where he founded many newspapers and journals, including Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper (1855), and Frank Leslie’s Boys’ and Girls’ Weekly (1866). When he passed away, in 1880, his wife legally changed her name to Frank Leslie and continued the business. She died a wealthy woman, and bequeathed most of her estate to the feminist Carrie Chapman Catt in support of the suffrage movement.
Of course, not all the Leslie’s readers are American. Maddie particularly enjoys practicing her English by reading his children’s weekly. She intends to entertain herself with the issue below on the long train ride to the South of France. If your girls are likewise traveling for the Fall holidays, perhaps they’ll enjoy a copy as well. This is the complete issue from September 19, 1868.
