Who amongst us hasn’t drooled over the wondrous collection of stockings made for Chiffonnette by Sylvia Mac Neil? If you haven’t seen them, or if you’d like the pattern she provided to make them, head over to Resources for information on where to find your own copy of Antique Doll Collector Magazine.
Meanwhile, back to Maddie’s stockings.
I’m currently stuck on what to do about the “bird directionality” issue I’m faced with. The original child’s stockings from which Maddie’s will be made have a row of flowers and birds up each side of the leg. I had planned to use just one line of embroidery up the front of each stocking. But this means the birds will face each other, and I don’t know what the historic protocol would be in a situation where embroidered birds might have a staring contest going on under a girl’s skirt.
The other option is to place the design up the outer side of each leg, with the front and inner part having no design. But then they’re only visible if Maddie stands sideways.
I’m going to work on some slightly less fancy sets of stockings while I think about this some more.
