Bernadette with Shoes and Corset

When Bernadette arrived in California, she brought a small wardrobe with her. This included the slip she’s wearing in the photo above, as well as a corset and shoes with crocheted socks.

The exact slip and corset can be seen on page 49 of “The Blue Book” (Bleuette: son trousseau d’origine Gautier-Languereau 1905 – 1960). The shoes are also shown, on page 27. They’re referred to as “Summer Shoes”, and were sold in 1909.

Here are some close up photos of the corset:

In addition to underthings and footwear, Bernadette owns a classic GL Marin, comprised of a sleeveless underdress and overblouse.

I found the construction of the underdress particularly interesting. The blue wool must have been expensive, because aside from the center section, the bodice is made of plain cotton. The band at the waist is also curious, being on the outside rather than inside. The skirt was sewn to the bodice so the seam would land on the outside, and this was covered with the tarlatan band to finish it.

Along with these wonderful GL pieces, Bernadette brought a beautiful mommy-made smock dress, sewn from cotton twill and embroidered in red. It closes in the back with a single button and thread loop at the neck. Which suggests it was meant to be worn over something else.

The hat is GL, and has had to be hidden due to someone wearing it too frequently in front of the Bleuettes who do NOT own GL hats.

I’m not naming names. But “someone” is currently on time out for showing off.

  1. I also own a Bleuette with same GL pieces! My theory on the underdress using white cotton was to reduce thickness. In this Marine outfit wool is not too bad, but in some other dresses I have it definitely would be much thicker.
Are you looking for a beret that came with the Marine outfit?….

I really relate to your journey. I collect only antique fashion dolls, apply tender loving care to restore and dress… and Bleuette whom I consider a fashion doll with all her outfits.

And hope one day, when I retire, to build a Titanic era trousseau for my COD 1496…. she now only got one dress 🙂

All that being sad, no surprise that I love reading your blog….

    1. Thanks so much, Larissa! I thought about the issue of bulk as well. Although in this case, as you said, the blue wool is very lightweight. Glad you enjoy the blog. I’m sure your 1469 will have a beautiful wardrobe someday soon!
