Seven Pair of Stockings

Tiny stockings are a joyful thing! It’s surprisingly satisfying to look at them splayed out in a little multi-colored fan. It was slow going at first  –  about six hours each for the first two pair. But once I got the process of attaching the soles worked out, I sped up considerably. And since that detail is what makes me so happy (I mean, how adorable is it that the soles are a separate piece!?!) it was well worth the extra effort.

Maddie’s face looks just as thrilled as Chiffonnette’s did when surrounded by all of her stockings. This, in spite of the significant injury I inflicted on her in the process of sewing them (you can read all about that disaster HERE). She’s rightly proud of the variety she has to choose from: cream open work, brown open work, embroidered lilac, red, pink, café au lait, and seafoam green. A different pair for each day of the week.

But.

I’m still struggling with fabric envy  –  mainly, coveting Chiffonnette’s pink plaid and orange stripes. I feel silly admitting this since I did have those beautiful lilac stockings to work with, in addition to all the other antique pieces I’d collected over the years. I just can’t get what I don’t have out of my head. I’m also a bit tired from my new IF eating program (I’m on day eight and clearly not yet adjusted to the fasting portion).

I need coffee.

And possibly therapy.

And then more coffee.

Meanwhile, if you’re interested in what I finally decided was the best way to sew stockings, check out my newest sewing tutorial HERE.

PS: The solution to the bird directionality issue came from my mother. “Why not do them tail to tail?” she asked.

Why not, indeed.
